Can handheld radios and marine radios talk to each other?

release date:2025-04-27

Handheld radios and marine radios can talk to each other under certain conditions, the key lies in the frequency setting and equipment compatibility.

The operating frequency range of marine radio is usually TX from 156.025MHz - 157.425MHz, RX from 156.050MHz - 163.275MHz, and the number of channels is 88, including international channels, American channels and Canadian channels, etc. On the other hand, the general handheld radio can talk to each other. In general, the frequency bands of handheld radios are VHF (Very High Frequency) 137 - 167MHz and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) 401 - 423.5MHz, etc. If the frequency of handheld radios is not the same as that of VHF, the frequency of RX is from 156.050MHz to 163.275MHz. If the frequency range of the handheld radio includes the operating frequency of the marine radio, and the frequency is set to the same channel as the marine radio when it is in use, theoretically, it is possible to realize mutual communication. For example, it is possible to talk to a marine radio by setting the transceiver frequency of the hand-held radio to 156.450 MHz on channel 09 at the same frequency point as the marine radio.

However, the marine walkie-talkie is designed to adapt to the harsh environment at sea, with special features such as waterproof, moisture-proof, corrosion-resistant, etc., and is also different from the ordinary handheld radio in terms of audio processing, antenna design, etc., in order to ensure that the communication at sea is clear and stable. If ordinary handheld radios are to be used on board, the communication effect may be affected by environmental factors.
